Artist Portraits _ Azin Lim
Concept: Butterfly

Azin’s first impression is unwavering: the image of a butterfly. I wanted to create a bright, joyful mood with the image of a blue Morpho butterfly to be specific.
The key to the shoot was “to resemble the butterfly without directly referencing it.” In other words, I challenged myself to express a butterfly without using the wings. I wanted to capture Azin’s radiating vibrance.
In May 2024, I had documented the performance The Na-bi Chronicles: a bedtime story by Azin Lim, which prompted me to propose this photoshoot, in hopes of capturing her laughter as well as the turmoil beyond.
When I first proposed the project, I had a relatively simple idea. However, when I met Azin on site, she possessed much richer, more colorful sides. Against the bright yellow background, she was like a flag under the sunlight. In her rippling wave-like dress, she reminded me of a black reef. And when she was with the flowers, she became giant wings themselves. While watching Azin through the lens as she enjoyed the movement itself, I, too, was able to become immersed in the powerful movement. What a joyful experience capturing the artist in this brilliant moment!

Concept: Butterfly

아진님의 첫인상에서 결코 흔들리지 않는 이미지가 나비입니다. 특히 모르포 나비 종류의 푸른 나비 이미지를 가져가서 즐겁고 환한 이미지를 만들고자 했어요.
촬영의 핵심으로 제가 생각한 부분은 ‘나비의 직접 인용이 없으나 나비 같아 보이는’ 입니다. 즉 날개를 붙이지 않고 나비를 보여주는 연출을 도전해보고자 했습니다. 아진님의 화사하고 찬연한 느낌을 살려 찍고 싶었어요.
2024년 5월 임아진 작가의 〈나비 연대기: 잠자리 동화〉 퍼포먼스를 기록하며 화면 너머로 그를 관찰하게 된 것을 계기로, 작가님의 웃음과 그 너머의 파란을 기록하고자 작가님에게 초상을 제안하게 되었습니다.
작업을 제안 드릴 당시만 해도 비교적 단순한 형태의 마음으로 촬영 기획을 드렸어요. 그러나 현장에서 마주한 아진님은 보다 더 풍부하고 다채로운 얼굴을 갖고 계셨습니다. 샛노란 배경에서는 햇빛 아래 깃발 같은, 일렁이는 파도와 닮은 의상에선 마치 검은 암초와 같은, 그리고 꽃과 함께한 모습에선 거대한 날개 그 자체와 같은 모습을 보여주셨어요. 스스로의 움직임 그 자체를 즐기는 모습을 렌즈 너머로 바라보며, 저 또한 거센 움직임 속에 젖어들 수 있는 멋진 시간이었습니다. 작가님의 찬란한 시간을 기록할 수 있어 즐거웠어요!
