Faces is an ongoing project in which I draw portraits of the people at queer events and venues. The series aims to document the diverse faces of queer individuals and allies, building solidarity. As of August 2026, 320 faces have been recorded.
얼굴들은 퀴어 행사 및 장소들에서 만난 사람들의 초상화를 그리는 프로젝트다. 그림을 통해 퀴어 당사자와 앨라이의 다채로운 얼굴들을 기록하고 색다른 방식으로 연대하고자 한다. 2026년 8월 기준 320개의 얼굴들이 모였다.

Faces is an ongoing archival project that collects portrait drawings made at queer events and spaces. I started drawing queer portraits several years before the project had this name, but only began keeping them as an archive in 2024. Through drawing, the project documents the faces that gather at these events, and looks for new kinds of connection through portraiture. As of August 2026, 320 faces have been documented, and the archive continues to grow on this site.
How It Works
The project takes place at Pride expos, queer parades, community events, and similar spaces. Sometimes I sit at a booth and draw whoever comes by; other times I walk through the streets with my materials and approach people myself. I introduce the project, ask whether I may draw them, and if they agree, the portrait takes somewhere between three and ten minutes. On a crowded street I draw faster; sitting across a table from someone, I take a little longer. We make eye contact and talk while I draw. Since the point of the project is the archive, participants don’t take the original with them, though they’re welcome to photograph it.
Who Is Drawn
Faces is not about identifying and selecting people who are queer. I never ask participants whether they are. They may be queer, an ally, somewhere in between, or simply someone passing through. What matters isn’t confirming anyone’s identity but keeping a record of the faces gathered in that place on that day. The archive is organized accordingly — not by individual, but by time and place, in series like Faces of Seoul Queer Parade 2026.
Anonymity
Every participant in this project remains anonymous. Some people are in situations where having their face circulate could lead to an unwanted outing, and I wanted a format they could take part in too. That’s also why I work in drawing rather than photography or video. A drawing can resemble the person in front of me or abstract them as far as needed. Participants who don’t want their face to appear as it is ask for what they’d prefer instead — a cartoon-like figure with dot eyes, a black block painted over the finished face, an animal in place of a person.
The Time Spent Drawing
As much as the archive itself, what matters is the conversation that happens during those few minutes. Everyone in the archive is someone I met in person. Moving a face onto paper, I start noticing things I would have walked past otherwise: a dimple on one side only, a halo of flyaway hairs, the way the corners of a mouth stretch in a smile, the placement of a beauty mark, the number of piercings. I don’t know their name, their job, or their age, but after a few minutes of looking closely, I have the strange feeling of having come to know them a little. The context of a queer event, and the fact that anonymity is guaranteed, seems to make these encounters particular. Many participants have told me about their lives, their loves, their families, their identities while I drew. The portrait ends up being a record of a face and of the brief meeting itself.
Faces is ongoing, and new faces are added to the archive after each event.
〈얼굴들〉은 퀴어 행사와 장소에서 사람들의 초상화를 그리고 모아가는 확장형 아카이빙 프로젝트다. 퀴어 초상화를 그리기 시작한 것은 그보다 몇 년 앞서지만, 그린 그림을 아카이브로 모으기 시작한 것은 2024년부터다. 그림을 통해 퀴어 행사에 모인 얼굴들을 기록하고, 초상을 매개로 새로운 연결을 만들어보려는 시도다. 2026년 8월 기준으로 320개의 얼굴이 아카이브에 기록되어 있으며, 아카이브는 이 홈페이지에 계속 쌓이고 있다.
진행 방식
프라이드 엑스포, 퀴어 퍼레이드, 커뮤니티 행사 등의 장소에서 진행한다. 부스에 앉아 찾아오는 사람을 맞기도 하고, 그림 도구를 들고 거리를 걸으며 사람들에게 먼저 말을 걸기도 한다. 프로젝트를 소개하고 초상화를 그려도 되겠냐고 물어 동의를 받으면, 3분에서 10분쯤 걸려 그린다. 사람이 많은 거리에서는 조금 더 빠르게, 테이블에 마주 앉을 때는 조금 더 천천히 그리게 된다. 그리는 동안에는 자연스럽게 눈을 마주치고 이야기를 나눈다. 아카이빙이 목적이라 원화는 참여자에게 전달하지 않지만, 사진으로 남겨 갈 수는 있다.
누구를 그리나
이 프로젝트는 ‘퀴어인 사람들’을 골라 그리는 작업이 아니다. 나는 참여자에게 퀴어인지 묻지 않는다. 퀴어일 수도, 앨라이일 수도, 그 사이 어딘가에 있는 사람일 수도 있고, 우연히 그 자리를 지나던 사람일 수도 있다. 중요한 건 정체성을 확인하는 일이 아니라, 그날 그 자리에 모여 있던 얼굴들을 남기는 일이다. 그래서 아카이브는 개인이 아니라 〈2026 서울 퀴어 퍼레이드의 얼굴들〉처럼 시간과 장소를 단위로 묶인다.
익명성
이 프로젝트에서 모든 참여자는 익명으로 남는다. 얼굴이 알려지는 일이 원치 않는 아웃팅으로 이어질 수 있는 자리에 있는 사람들이 있고, 나는 그런 사람도 참여할 수 있는 형식을 만들고 싶었다. 사진이나 영상 대신 그림을 택한 이유도 여기에 있다. 그림은 앞에 있는 사람을 닮게 그릴 수도, 얼마든지 추상적으로 옮길 수도 있다. 그래서 얼굴이 그대로 드러나지 않기를 원하는 참여자들은 각자 원하는 방식을 요청한다. 점눈의 만화 캐릭터로 그려달라고 하기도 하고, 완성된 얼굴 위에 검은 블록을 칠해달라고 하기도 하고, 사람 대신 동물로 그려달라고 하기도 한다.
그리는 시간
아카이브만큼 중요한 것은 초상화를 그리는 짧은 시간 동안 오가는 대화다. 아카이브에 있는 사람들은 모두 내가 직접 만난 사람들이다. 얼굴을 종이 위에 옮기다 보면 그냥 지나쳤다면 못 보고 넘어갔을 것들이 눈에 들어온다. 한쪽에만 있는 보조개, 유난히 많은 잔머리, 웃을 때 길게 올라가는 입꼬리, 점의 위치, 피어싱의 개수 같은 것들. 이름도 직업도 나이도 모르는 사람인데, 몇 분 동안 그 얼굴을 들여다보고 있으면 이상하게 그 사람을 조금 알게 된 것 같은 기분이 든다. 퀴어 행사라는 맥락과 익명이 보장된 자리는 이런 만남을 조금 더 특별하게 만드는 것 같다. 많은 참여자들이 그림이 그려지는 동안 자기 삶과 사랑, 가족, 정체성에 대한 이야기를 들려주었다. 초상화는 얼굴의 기록이면서 동시에 그 짧은 만남의 기록이기도 하다.
〈얼굴들〉은 계속 진행 중이며, 새로운 행사에서 그린 얼굴들이 아카이브에 더해진다.
