Na-bi tale (2025)나비전 (2025)

Na-bi appeared in my works around the time I was taking my first nervous steps into exploring queerness. I had drawn a butterfly with yellow wings, red boots, and blue hair, sobbing and roaming about. Since then, as I continued my personal journey navigating the queer community of Seoul, I kept adding to Na-bi’s story, until it eventually became a central character in my works. Through paintings, sculptures, books and performances, I reiterated the tale, occasionally becoming Na-bi myself, and at times making up details to the story only known to myself. Na-bi tale brings together the full story that had previously only been shown in pieces. Though it may not have an ending, I hope this tale finds its audience.

나비가 처음 등장한 것은 내가 막 ‘이쪽 세계’의 문을 두드리기 시작했을 무렵이다. 우연히 그린 그림 속 나비는 노란 날개, 빨간 부츠, 파란 머리를 하고 엉엉 울며 정처없이 걷고 있는 모습이었다. 이후 내가 서울의 퀴어 커뮤니티를 탐험하고 정체성에 대한 고민을 지속하는 그 불안한 시간 동안 나비의 서사에 점점 살이 붙어갔고 어느새 나비는 내 작품 속 주인공의 자리를 차지했다. 나는 나비의 연대기 속 장면들을 회화, 조형, 그림책, 퍼포먼스로 곱씹으며 나비가 되어 사람들을 만나거나 거리를 걸어보기도 하고 나만 아는 수많은 설정을 만들어내기도 했다. 전시 〈나비전〉은 이제까지 이곳저곳에서 조각내어 들려주고 전시했던 나비의 이야기를 처음으로 한데 모았다. 언제 그리고 어떻게 끝이 날지 장담할 수 없는 이야기지만 들어주길 바란다.
