Foreign Bodies: Queer Community, Diaspora & Belonging

Foreign Bodies: 퀴어 커뮤니티, 디아스포라, 그리고 소속감

Foreign Bodies brought together two artists whose practices explore what it means to inhabit bodies, identities, and communities across cultural and social borders.

Azin Lim and Katarzyna Mazur have each built independent practices rooted in the body, gaze, and belonging — Azin through painting, sculpture, installation, and performance; Katarzyna through photography, collage, and video, from a queer feminist perspective. Having met in Seoul, the two found their work spoke to shared questions of diaspora, visibility, and the body.

In an informal conversation grounded in their books — Azin’s Get L-Ready with me: how to Femme & Butch and Katarzyna’s ANNA KONDA and A(N)NAMORPHOSIS — Azin spoke about queer art and community in Korea, while Katarzyna reflected on her residency experience in Seoul. Midway through, the two artists staged a surprise performance, transforming their styling from femme to butch live in front of the audience.

Foreign Bodies는 문화적·사회적 경계를 넘나들며 몸과 정체성, 커뮤니티 안에 산다는 것의 의미를 탐구하는 두 작가의 작업을 소개하는 자리였습니다.

임아진과 카타즈나 마수르는 각자 몸, 시선, 소속감을 중심으로 독립적인 작업 세계를 구축해왔습니다. 임아진은 회화, 조각, 설치, 퍼포먼스로, 카타즈나는 퀴어 페미니즘 관점의 사진, 콜라주, 비디오로 작업합니다. 서울에서 처음 만난 두 사람은 디아스포라와 가시성, 몸이라는 공통된 질문을 각자 다른 방식으로 다루고 있다는 것을 발견했습니다.

각자의 책—임아진의 ≪겟레디위드미: 펨 되기, 부치 되기≫와 카타즈나의 ≪ANNA KONDA≫, ≪A(N)NAMORPHOSIS≫—을 출발점 삼은 비공식적인 대화 속에서, 임아진은 한국 퀴어 미술과 커뮤니티에 대해, 카타즈나는 서울 레지던시 경험을 이야기했습니다. 토크 중간에는 두 작가가 즉석에서 펨 스타일링을 부치 스타일링으로 바꾸는 깜짝 퍼포먼스도 펼쳐졌습니다.
