Faces is an expanding archival project that collects portrait drawings made at queer events and spaces. At Pride expos, queer parades, and community events, portraits are drawn at a booth for whoever comes by, or out in the streets, where people are approached directly. Once someone agrees, the drawing takes three to ten minutes, and the artist and sitter make eye contact and talk while it’s made. All participants remain anonymous.
Participants are never asked whether they’re queer. What matters isn’t confirming anyone’s identity but keeping a record of the faces gathered in that place on that day — so the archive is organized by time and place rather than by individual.
Until this year, the project had only taken place in Korea. In the summer of 2026, Faces travelled outside the country for the first time: these portraits come from Berlin in mid-July, and from Amsterdam between late July and early August. The method stayed the same, as did the principle of not asking — but the faces across the table, and the stories they brought, were different.
As a face moves onto paper, details emerge that would otherwise go unnoticed. A dimple on one side only, a halo of flyaway hairs, the way the corners of a mouth stretch in a smile. Without knowing a name or an age, several minutes of close looking leave the strange sense of having come to know someone a little.
As of August 2026, 320 faces have been documented in the archive. This exhibition presents 127 of them — faces met in this city only weeks ago, now hanging on its walls. Alongside them, Collecting Faces brings together footage of the drawing sessions in Amsterdam, filmed as they happened.
〈얼굴들〉은 퀴어 행사와 장소에서 사람들의 초상화를 그리고 모아가는 확장형 아카이빙 프로젝트다. 프라이드 엑스포, 퀴어 퍼레이드, 커뮤니티 행사 등에서 부스에 앉아 찾아오는 사람을 맞기도 하고, 그림 도구를 들고 거리를 걸으며 먼저 말을 걸기도 한다. 동의를 받으면 3분에서 10분쯤 걸려 초상화가 그려지고, 그 시간 동안 자연스럽게 눈을 마주치고 이야기를 나눈다. 참여자는 모두 익명으로 남는다.
참여자에게 퀴어인지는 묻지 않는다. 중요한 건 정체성을 확인하는 일이 아니라 그날 그 자리에 모여 있던 얼굴들을 남기는 일이라, 아카이브는 개인이 아니라 시간과 장소를 단위로 묶인다.
지금까지 이 프로젝트는 한국에서만 진행되었다. 2026년 여름, 처음으로 한국 바깥에서 〈얼굴들〉이 진행되었다. 7월 중순 베를린에서, 이어 7월 말부터 8월 초에 암스테르담에서 만난 사람들의 얼굴이다. 그리는 방식도, 묻지 않는 원칙도 그대로였지만 마주 앉은 얼굴들과 그들이 들려준 이야기는 달랐다.
얼굴을 종이에 옮기다 보면 그냥 지나쳤다면 보지 못했을 것들이 눈에 들어온다. 한쪽에만 있는 보조개, 유난히 많은 잔머리, 웃을 때 길게 올라가는 입꼬리. 이름도 나이도 모르는 사람이지만, 몇 분 동안 그 얼굴을 들여다보고 있으면 이상하게 그 사람을 조금 알게 된 듯한 감각이 생긴다.
2026년 8월 기준 320개의 얼굴이 아카이브에 기록되어 있다. 이번 전시에서는 그중 127점을 선보인다. 몇 주 전 이 도시에서 만난 얼굴들이 같은 도시의 벽에 걸린다. 함께 상영되는 〈얼굴 모으기〉는 암스테르담에서 그림이 그려지던 현장을 담은 영상이다.

Azin Lim draws the faces of people she encounters at queer festivals in Berlin and Amsterdam. She does not ask their names or whether they identify as queer. Every participant remains anonymous.
Portraiture is often understood as a way of showing who a person is. In Lim’s drawings, however, there is no identifying information. What remains is a face, an expression, a posture, and the brief moment shared between artist and subject.
A queer festival is a space in which a community makes itself visible. Yet the people portrayed here do not stand as representatives of a group. They remain distinct individuals.
The exhibition focuses on the coexistence of a visible community and an anonymous individual. The community can be seen, but the individual remains unnamed. Anonymity does not erase the person; instead, the absence of information allows each face to appear more clearly.
Faces begins with the act of looking before classification.
임아진은 베를린과 암스테르담의 퀴어 페스티벌에서 만난 사람들의 얼굴을 현장에서 그린다. 이름을 묻지 않고, 그들이 퀴어인지도 확인하지 않는다. 그림 속 인물들은 모두 익명이다.
초상화는 대개 한 사람이 누구인지 보여주는 형식으로 여겨진다. 그러나 임아진의 드로잉에는 인물을 설명하는 정보가 없다. 남는 것은 얼굴과 표정, 자세, 그리고 작가와 모델이 잠시 마주했던 시간이다.
퀴어 페스티벌은 공동체가 자신을 적극적으로 드러내는 장소다. 그 안에서 그려진 인물들은 분명 공동체의 일부이지만, 어느 집단을 대표하는 이미지가 아닌 서로 다른 개인으로 남는다.
이번 전시에서 주목한 것은 ‘보이는 공동체’와 ‘익명의 개인’이 동시에 존재하는 방식이다. 공동체는 보이지만 개인은 익명이다. 여러 사람이 같은 공간에 모여 있지만, 누구도 하나의 정체성만으로 완전히 설명되지는 않는다.
익명성은 인물을 지우지 않는다. 오히려 이름과 정보가 사라진 자리에 서로 다른 얼굴이 더 분명하게 남는다. 〈얼굴들〉은 사람을 분류하기 전에 먼저 바라보는 일에 관한 전시다.
